Ex-Browns GM Eyeing a New Career Path? - Thu, Apr 9 2009 at 10:59 am
In the three months or so since being dumped by the Browns, former general manager Phil Savage has kept a low profile.
While his name was attached to one rumor — a job with the Detroit Lions — he has, for the most part, stayed in the background and has given no indication as to what his future might hold.
Until now.
According to a report in the Birmingham News, Savage will serve as the radio color commentator for Alabama’s annual spring game April 18. Savage, who was born in Mobile, AL, and began his football career as a graduate assistant for the Tide, says this is a one-shot deal, but makes it very clear that he would like to continue the gig for a lot longer than that.
“This is strictly just a one-day commitment, I guess. We’ll see what happens after that,” Savage said according to the paper. “But I’m obviously excited about it. I’m hopeful that maybe it does turn into something in the future, but I have no way of knowing that at this point.”
Savage will replace Kenny Stabler, the former ‘Bama and Raiders QB who took a leave of absence in 2008 following his third DUI arrest in 13 years. Stabler would like to return to the booth, but it’s uncertain whether or not the school will reciprocate that interest.
If it doesn’t, Savage would have no issue with stepping into The Snake’s shoes.
“I said I would love to at least have an opportunity to get my name into the hat if the position is still available, pending what’s going to happen with Kenny,” Savage said. “Obviously, he’s done a great job over the years. I don’t want to interfere with that. But if there’s a possibility of me getting involved in it, please let me know.”
Its unclear at this time how Savage will be able to hold a microphone during the telecast as he’s known to carry a Bible in one hand and a knife in the other.
