Romeo to Coach - Tue, Dec 30 2008 at 10:59 pm
Is it just me or does anyone find it strange that many in the media are sounding like it would be great if Romeo decided to stay with the Browns.
Have they seen the coaching over the past four years?
I also find it strange that Romeo would even want to hang around and coach under another coach. If he does that, it definitely shows that he won’t let his ego get in the way.
However, after seeing the total embodiment of his coaching the past four years, do Browns fans really want him to continue to coach?
If Randy Lerner wants him to stay in Cleveland, that’s great. Maybe he could be in player relations or something besides coaching. He is a great guy–probably the nicest guy I’ve ever dealt with as a head coach– and the players really like him, but I don’t think they necessarily played any better for him.
Everybody says he was a great defensive coordinator but I’m convinced that Bill Belichick was the game planner when the Patriots were winning Super Bowls. Remember, when they were pulling guys off the street to play in the secondary and receiver Troy Brown was playing defensive back. They patched up the defense with duct tape and band aids and still won the Super Bowl. I think Romeo was carrying out orders more like a lieutenant as opposed to being the general.
I didn’t see any of that the past four years on the defensive side of the ball. Even with injuries and depleted ranks, the defense continually was unable to stop the run and get to the quarterback.
We’ll see how this all plays out–as the soap opera plays out.
Couldn’t agree more.
I don;t think he has ever excelled at any aspect of coaching that I have seen. he was simply terrible as the Browns DC during that tenure and his reults as a head coach are obvious. If he stay s in the organization fine, as long as he has no say in what happens on the field. As close as I am to baling on the Browns after 48 years of fandom, I think if he is our Dc, I will abandon having a favorite NFL team.
I could not agree more. I found it very strange when it was first mentioned that Romeo might stick around. Why in the world is that a good idea? He is a nice guy and all but I really don’t want him on the Browns coaching staff any longer. Let’s move on already.
You all are ignoring what is what IS glaringly wrong with the Cleveland Browns. It doesn’t matter how Romeo coached the team if the talent level was not up to par. The heart and soul of the NE/Belichick/Crennel 3-4 defense is the LB corps and the SS position. These have not been manned well so far. Sean Jones potential maybe, D’Qwell maybe, Wimbley maybe, McGinest best years gone. The balance in the pass rush was not there. We just got some adequate 3-4 linemen in year 4. I don’t care what type of genius calls the play, if a player gets his ass whipped getting it done, it doesn’t matter. Savage was responsible for team talent and depth. Romeo never had Richard Seymour or Vince Wilfork up front, Vrabel and Bruschii, Rodney Harrison or Ty Law. You think that doesn’t make a difference?
The topic is quite hot on the Internet at the moment. What do you pay attention to while choosing what to write about?
