Why Not the 4-3? - Sun, Sep 7 2008 at 11:02 pm

I was just musing on my way home from another opening season loss for the Browns. If linebackers are the key to the 3-4, why don’t the Browns try going to the 4-3?

The strength of the defense is clearly the defensive line. They could play Shaun Smith and Shaun Rogers at the tackles and Robaire Smith and Corey Williams at the ends. Then, you only have to play three linebackers.

It doesn’t seem to me that the Browns have the impact linebackers to play the 3-4. If they went to the 4-3, then use Kamerion Wimbley at one outside spot and Willie McGinest, Leon Williams or Alex Hall at the other outside spot. Play D’Qwell Jackson in the middle with Andra Davis as his backup.

Romeo Crennel has made his living as a defensive coach. I would like to see him adapt to his personnel and come up with something to utilized the perceived strength of the team.
